#BlackMommaMagic: Songs About Our Mommas

#BlackMommaMagic: Songs About Our Mommas

By now, your Instagram and Facebook timelines have been flooded with photos of mothers, grandmothers, great-grandmothers and more. Just in case you’re confused by all these images, today is Mother’s Day. The day that you celebrate the person who has guided you through this world, it could be your mom or some other motherly figure, who has helped you through this thing called life.

My Mother’s Mother’s Day

Honestly, Mother’s Day has been a difficult day for me over the past couple of years.  Ever since moving back home after Graduate School, my relationship with my Mother has gone from 0 to 100- “real quick, real fuck quick man”. Simply put, when you are a 20-something year old, yeah I’m not telling you my age, it’s challenging living with your Mother. Now, let me be clear  every day isn’t horrible and I LOVE my mommy. She supports me in the best way she can and I appreciate that. So today, I will celebrate her and all the things she has provided for me, from sending me off to my first trip to Africa in 8th grade to only letting me play with Black baby dolls- Oh and let’s not forget the current roof over my head.

So even though my Momma gets on my nerves sometimes, and the feeling is mutual,- there’s no denying her #BlackMommaMagic. I don’t think I have to explain #BlackMommaMagic.  #BlackMommaMagic is sprinkled in a lot of Black childhoods based on all the songs by Black artist about their Mommas. Below I have shared a few of my favorite songs and lyrics that help me remember the beautiful things about my Black Momma.

Happy Mother’s Day!
